The phone rang at six this morning. It was an urgent plea for "Miss Updike" to come and teach. The kindergarten teacher was sick. Well, Miss Updike answered the plea and came to the rescue, but she never expected to be as blessed as she was this day. Oelrichs Public School performed a beautiful Veteran's Day program and brought Miss Updike to tears. Eager, little American voices sang with patriotic fervor, and veteran's recounted stories of their service for America.
My sweet, little Indians sang this song:
One of the teachers (a veteran) spoke to the students, telling them how hard it was to watch some of them refuse to salute the flag. She spoke of how she, and others like her fought and sacrificed so much for American liberty.
"It's really hard when you guys don't put your hands over your hearts and pledge allegiance to the flag. I fought so you would be free."
I can't help wondering how much it hurts the veteran's as they watch the next president of their country refuse to salute the flag.
Happy Veteran's Day! Don't ever forget what they did for you!
